ベルリンの壁が崩壊したのは１９８９年１１月９日。あれから２０年が経ちました。先日、短い期間でしたが、ベルリンに滞在中、ドイツの多くのメディアが当時の特集を組み、ベルリンの象徴であるブランデンブルク門ではＵ２のコンサートが行なわれるなど、華やかなものでした。
ただ、当時のベルリンにいた者としては、あの日の夜は「新しい時代の幕開け」という感じではなかった。むしろ、それ以前に盛り上がった旧東独市民の民主化運動が萎んでしまうのではないかという不安の方が強かった。東ベルリンでは、通りや電車の中で見知らぬ人同士が「この国をどうするか」という議論を闘わしていたのです。あんな光景はいままで見たことがありませんでした。
ベルリンの壁崩壊直後に始まった旧ユーゴスラビアの民族紛争は、私のなかでは、壁崩壊後のドイツ統一に向かう人々のただならぬ熱狂とどこかでつながっています。
現在では壁の跡もわからないくらい変わったドイツの首都ですが、戦後、変わらず残っているひとつが写真のガイザーヴィルヘルム記念教会です。第二次世界大戦の爆撃で壊れたままの姿で残されているこの教会は、ベルリンの「原爆ドーム」といえるかもしれません。
演劇の勉強をしに東ベルリンで生活を始めた私が、「チェックポイントチャーリー」という、歩いて渡る東西ベルリン国境を越え、初めて西ベルリンに入ったのは、壁の壊れる１年前でした。晩秋で日はとっぷりと暮れ、真っ暗な人気のないベルリンの壁の周辺。そこを沿って、歩いていると、途中で、ナチス親衛隊本部跡地や、戦争の傷跡の残る旧ドイツ帝国議会（現在のドイツ連邦議会）に出くわします。そんなとき、私はタイムスリップしたかのような感覚に襲われ、国境の照明塔の下、１人で黙々と「壁打ちテニス」をしている若者の姿に、シュールレアリズムの世界を見るような錯覚を覚えたのでした。
その後、西ベルリンを延々と歩いたはてに、たどり着いたのがガイザーヴィルヘルム記念教会。町の中心部に立つこの建物を前にした私は、しばらくその場から動けませんでした。
