─２０年前のカメルーンとユーゴスラビア─
その男はいつも後半２０分くらいからピッチに現れ、相手の僅かな隙をついて、ゴールポストを揺らし、観客の目を一気にさらっていった。
１９９０年のワールドカップ・イタリア大会におけるカメルーンのフォワード、ロジェ・ミラ。３８歳。ベテランゆえ、９０分、ピッチを走るのは厳しい。だ から、ここぞという後半に決まって登場する。ミラが得点を決めると、カメルーンの選手はコーナーポストを囲み、ダンスのように身体を躍らせた。
当時、東ベルリンの大学に留学していた私は同じ学生寮に住むミャンマー人の部屋のテレビで、毎晩ワールドカップの試合を見ていた。そこにはエチオピア、ロシア（当時はまだソ連）、ポーランド、フィリピンの学生らが集まっていた。
みなサッカー好きだが、ワールドカップには縁のない、あるいは出場してもあまり実績を上げていない国の者ばかりである（日本にはまだＪリーグがなかった）。
そんなメンバーが贔屓にしていたのは、ブラジルでも、イタリアでも、ドイツでもなく、開幕戦でマラドーナ率いる前回優勝のアルゼンチンを破ったカメルーンだった。
彼らは実に楽しそうにサッカーをやっていた。スタジアムの一角に陣取った自国サポーターも、原色のあでやかな衣装に身を包み、カメルーンチームがゴールを決めるたびに、はじけるような笑顔でリズミカルに身体を動かし、喜びを表現した。
カメルーンは一次リーグを突破し、決勝トーナメントでもミラの得点でコロンビアを下す。準々決勝のイングランド戦で力尽きたが、アフリカ勢としては快挙といえる成績だった。
この大会で、カメルーンに勝るとも劣らず、楽しいサッカーを展開したのはユーゴスラビアである。
ピッチを縦横無尽に動く選手たち。相手を翻弄するパス回し。なかでも逆サイド斜め前方を走る味方の足元へピンポイントのロングパスを繰り出した選手には驚いた。彼を実況アナウンサーは「ストイコヴィチ」と呼んだ。
ユーゴスラビアは準々決勝でアルゼンチンに延長引き分け末のＰＫ合戦で涙を呑んだ。これでユーゴスラビアの試合は見られないと思うと残念だったが、そのとき選手の多くがＰＫを蹴りたがらなかったということを知ったのは、ずっと後のことである。
監督のイビツァ・オシムは当時のことを次のように語っている（木村元彦著「オシムの言葉」より）。
「ほとんど戦争前のあのような状況においては誰もが蹴りたがらないのは当然のことだ。プロパガンダをしたくて仕方がないメディアに、誰が蹴って、誰が外したかが問題にされるからだ。そしてそれが争いの要因とされる」
ベルリンの壁が崩壊し、冷戦体制が消滅した東ヨーロッパで、これまで非同盟中立の理念を掲げていたユーゴスラビアという国家は、民族主義の台頭により大きく揺らいでいたのである。
イタリア大会は２大会連続でドイツ対アルゼンチンの決勝戦となり、ドイツが制した。互いに相手のよさをつぶしにかかるような試合は、私たちにはいささか退屈だった。
現在、名古屋グランパスの監督を務めるストイコヴィチは、試合後のコメントでしばしば「ビューティフル・フットボール」という表現を使う。組織的 な動きと戦術重視の風潮が支配的な世界のサッカー界にあって、彼がいまもユーゴスラビア時代に培われたサッカー観をもち続けていることがわかる。
さて、今週末に開幕する南アフリカ・ワールドカップ。日本代表の初戦相手はカメルーンだ。今度は日本の選手が２０年前のカメルーンのように世界を驚かせる番である。
