ディレクターの「それでは本番いきましょう！」という掛け声、そしてキュー出しのあと、ブース内のさんまさんは喋りだした。さっきまでのあの不機嫌そうな感じは全くなく、いつもと変わらぬトークでした。
さんまさんがノッてくると、ブース内のアシスタントの女性も、ブースの外のスタッフや私たちもゲラゲラと笑い出し、さっきまでの緊張感など忘れてしまっていました。
よかった、よかった、今日も楽しい展開になることだろう......そう思ったとき、私の横にいた後輩編集者が小声で言ったのです。
「あれ、もしかすると回ってませんよ」
彼が指差す方向には録音機材がありました。
その日は生放送ではなく、収録の回。機材がどういうものなのかよく知りませんし、当時の記憶も定かではないのですが、昔よく見たオープンリールのような巨大なテープがあり、それがグルグルと回っていれば「無事に録音中」という仕組みだったと思います。
ところが、それが止まったまま。
つまり、目の前で展開されている、さんまさんのトークは録音されていない、ということになります。
私と後輩編集者は顔を見合わせました。
「やばいですよ」と後輩の顔は訴えています。
さんまさんが喋り始めて、10分近く経っていたかもしれません。
トラブルについてディレクターに言うべきかどうか私たちが迷っていると、アシスタントディレクターが「事の次第」に気づいたようでした。
それを聞いたディレクターの顔は明らかに動揺しています。そりゃそうです。天下の明石家さんまのトークをムダにしてしまうのですから。
しかも、この日のさんまさんは相当機嫌が悪い。
青ざめるディレクターの様子を知ってか知らずか、さんまさんのトークは続いていました。（続く）
