"録音されないままの収録"は、10分ぐらい続いたように思います。
これ以上続けるわけにはいかない――意を決したディレクターは、何かスイッチを押して、ブース内のさんまさんに言いました。
「すみません。もう一度頭からお願いします」
その瞬間、さんまさんはそれまでのマシンガントークをやめて、ディレクターを睨んだ（ような気がした）。ちょうどディレクターの真後ろにいた私と後輩も、さんまさんに睨まれたような形になってしまった。
怖かった。
私は、完全にビビッていた。
こちらを見ているさんまさんの顔は、今までテレビで一度も見たことのない顔でした。さんまさんは、ドラマでシリアスな役をやったり、怒鳴ったりする場面もありましたが、それとも全く別の顔。言ってみれば、「感情が一切表れていない」という表現が一番近いかもしれません。
「機材トラブルで録音できてませんでした。すみません！」
ディレクターは頭を下げています。
実際には、ほんの数秒だったのでしょうが、その数十倍にも感じられた沈黙のあと、さんまさんは言いいました。
「ほな、やろうか」
ディレクターのキュー出しのあと、再び話し始めたさんまさん。やり直しだから、さっきの話を繰り返すものと思っていたら、全く別の話で、オープニングトークを展開していました。
「うわー、プロだな」と、私は心底感心したものです。
現在、関東地方では日曜午後にさんまさんのトーク番組「さんまのまんま」が放送されていますが、その冒頭、さんまさんが楽屋からスタジオに向う場面が流れます。しいて言えば、そのときのほんの一瞬の顔が、「あのときの顔」に近いかもしれません。
